Family-friendly SUVs like the Toyota Highlander and Kia Sorento should provide you with plenty of seating, lots of cargo room, and enough safety features to protect your most precious cargo. So, which one has what you're looking for in your next SUV? To help families in Ithaca, Elmira, and Binghamton decide, Maguire Toyota put this Toyota Highlander vs. Kia Sorento comparison together.

Passenger Room

The Toyota Highlander offers seating for up to eight people. It has three rows of seats with 60/40 split, sliding and reclining fold-flat second row seats to give passengers easy access in and out of the third row. The middle seats can comfortably fit three people with 59.6 inches of shoulder room.

For a little extra room and another path to the back, a pair of captain's chairs are available. This gives you seating for up to seven people, while replacing the second row's middle seat with a convenient aisle.

The Kia Sorento also has three rows of seats, but it's designed a little differently. While it also has three seats in the second row, there are only two seats in the back. Plus, captain's chairs are not an option. Passengers in the second row will also feel a bit cramped with only 58 inches of shoulder room.

Cargo Room

On top of having room for the whole family, both SUVs also feature lots of storage space. You'll find a big trunk in each one, plus folding seats in both the second and third rows.

The Toyota Highlander lets you load more though. It has 13.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row. With the second and third rows folded down, it has a cargo capacity of 83.7 cubic feet.

The Kia Sorento has a smaller trunk with only 11.3 cubic feet of space. Its overall cargo capacity is significantly smaller too. With the second and third rows folded flat, it only offers up to 73 cubic feet of space.

The Toyota Highlander helps keep your family safe with eight airbags and a frame that features front and rear crumple zones. These are designed to absorb the energy from a collision and direct it away from the interior.

There are also lots of driver-assistance features that can help prevent accidents. The Toyota Safety Sense™ P system comes standard and gives you more awareness with features like:

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Automatic High Beams

The Kia Sorento also has an energy-absorbing frame, but it only offers six airbags. Plus, while it also offers smart driver-assistance features, they don't come on every trim level the way Toyota Safety Sense™ P does.
