An SUV like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V should provide you with a dependable performance and the kind of features to help you have a fun and safe drive. So, which one has what you're looking for in your next SUV?

Maguire Toyota put together this 2019 Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V comparison to help drivers in Ithaca, Elmira, and Binghamton decide.

Toyota RAV4 vs Honda CR-V Performance

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 runs on a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This works with a versatile 8-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i).

The 2019 Honda CR-V can't quite deliver the same output. It's powered by a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that gets just 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. Its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) isn't as capable either.

While both SUVs can tow up to 1,500 pounds, the Toyota can do it more efficiently. It can get up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 35 MPG highway[i]. The Honda is also efficient when it comes to driving downtown but will require more stops for gas if you've got a longer commute or head out on a road trip. It gets up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway[ii].

Toyota RAV4 vs Honda CR-V Infotainment System

Each SUV features a user-friendly infotainment system. Both the 2019 Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are Bluetooth® compatible and let you sync your smartphone to a dashboard monitor with Apple CarPlay®.

The Toyota makes its infotainment system a little easier read with a 7-inch touchscreen. It also lets you stay connected wherever you go with Wi-Fi Connect Powered by Verizon. The Honda doesn't offer Wi-Fi. While a large touchscreen is also available, its base trim makes you settle for a 5-inch LCD screen.

Toyota RAV4 vs Honda CR-V Safety

Both the 2019 Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are designed to protect you with built-in front and rear crumple zones. These are built to redirect force away from the cabin in the event of an accident.

The Toyota does a better job of covering the interior though. Inside there are eight airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and front and rear side curtain airbags. The Honda also has side curtain airbags, but it leaves more of the interior exposed with only six airbags.

While both SUVs come with a standard backup camera, the Toyota RAV4 has more technology to watch the rest of your vehicle. The Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 system comes standard on all trim levels and prevents accidents with driver assistance features like:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beams

The Honda CR-V also offers its own driver assistance system and lots of similar features. However, none of them are standard or even available on the base trim.
