Toyota Tundra vs Tacoma: Performance

While the Tacoma may not be able to tow as much weight, it can achieve better fuel economy than the Tundra. While the Tundra can get you 13 city and 17 highway MPG, the Tacoma can go up to 20 city/23 highway MPG, producing greater efficiency as you move from location to location.1, 2

Looking at engine options, there are a few differences there, too. The Tundra offers one engine option, while the Tacoma offers two. The Tundra's standard V8 engine can produce up to 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, while the Tacoma's standard engine will get you up to 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The Tacoma's optional V6 engine produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

As you can see, the Tundra's one engine can output more power than either of the Tacoma's. Those looking for that extra boost of horsepower and torque may therefore decide on the Tundra-but if you don't anticipate needing that much, the Tacoma will still deliver exceptional performance.

Toyota Tundra vs Tacoma: Maximum Towing Capacity

If you plan to haul heavy loads of equipment, you may want to opt for the Tundra, as it has a maximum towing capacity of up to 10,200 pounds when properly equipped. The Tacoma pulls decent weight as well, but comes in slightly less at 6,400 pounds of maximum capacity when properly equipped.

The Tundra also comes with a standard Tow Package that includes some helpful additions, like a towing hitch receiver, a TOW/HAUL Mode switch, connector pins, and an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC). Similarly, the Tacoma offers a Class-IV towing hitch receiver, pin connectors, and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) when selecting the optional V6 engine.

Toyota Tundra vs Tacoma: Interior Dimensions

The Toyota Tundra can seat more people compared to the Tacoma, so that's an important aspect to keep in mind as you consider the amount of people you may need to fit at any given time. The Tundra can seat five or six people, while the Tacoma can seat either four or five.

The interior dimensions don't differ that much, but the Tundra will occasionally edge out the Tacoma on a few measurements. Each model will still get you a standard 39.7 inches of headroom for front passengers. The Tundra, however, offers 38.9 inches of headroom space for those in the rear, while the Tacoma offers 38.3 inches.

Looking at the legroom, the Tacoma model will provide 42.9 inches for front passengers, and 32.6 inches for rear passengers. Compare that to the Tundra, where you'll get 42.5 inches up front, and 42.3 inches in the back-giving your rear-seat passengers up to ten inches of more space to stretch out.
